THE PROJECT

YLEM started as a refusal. A watch brand built by people dissatisfied with an entire industry — watches either priced behind waitlists and gatekeeping, or new brands chasing attention through cheap execution or overcrowded design. Neither felt right. So they decided to make the watch they couldn't find.

The name comes from theoretical physics: ylem is the primal matter that existed before the universe took form.

Before anything became anything. That's the founding conviction — start from zero, without inherited codes, and build something elemental. The first model, Addendum, follows the same logic. Its bezel shape is immediately recognisable: a cinched cutout that functions the way only the most considered watch designs do — remove it, and you still know what you're looking at. That kind of object clarity became the organising principle of the entire digital experience.

après- took on the full creative and digital direction for YLEM's launch.

The visual identity system, spatial language, copywriting, e-commerce architecture, 3D render supervision, and post-sale account flow — built from the ground up around a logo and typeface that had already been set. The brief had one non-negotiable: the audience visits more than once before buying. A watch at this level is a considered decision. The site had to reward that — a place worth spending ten minutes, worth returning to the next day. The animations shift. The object leads. The experience is designed to be read slowly, not scanned.

The site had to reward that — a place worth spending ten minutes, worth returning to the next day. The animations shift. The object leads. The experience is designed to be read slowly, not scanned. We built the visual language from the bezel outward. The cinched geometry of the Addendum became the spatial logic of the site — how sections open, how images are cropped, how space is held around the object. The copy was written to match: precise, laconic, without the aspirational inflation that YLEM's founders explicitly wanted to avoid. Underground. Cryptic. Authoritative.

The e-commerce layer is built around the reality of buying an object you haven't touched.

Dimensions, weight, wearability — the practical information a customer needs to imagine the watch on their wrist is structured into the product experience, not buried. The concierge account flow handles the post-sale relationship with the same care: correspondence with a brand that takes the transaction seriously. The result is a luxury watch website that doesn't announce itself. It waits. It rewards attention. Which, as it turns out, is exactly what the watch does too.
