THE PROJECT
Royal Stranger was founded by two architects who never stopped thinking like architects. Rui Santos and Sofia Pinho Santos built a furniture brand the way you'd build a building — from conviction, not from trend.
Every piece made to order. Every colour chosen like a decision, not a preference. Every form sculpted to be felt before it's understood.
Royal Stranger has been making luxury handcrafted furniture in Porto, Portugal since 2017. Pieces that are hard to ignore and easy to remember — a Marshmallow armchair in mustard yellow, a Ma'am collection that treats colour like a feminist act, lamps that look like they belong in a film set and somehow also in your living room. The work was always there. What wasn't quite there yet was the system around it.
That's where après- came in, and we've been in it for over a year now.
We started where you have to start — trying to understand what the brand actually is before deciding what it should look like. Royal for the craft, the materials, the obsessive attention to how something is made. Stranger for the rest of it. The unexpected silhouettes. The colours nobody else would commit to. The decision to make furniture that challenges the room rather than completes it. Once you understand that tension, everything else follows. The icon was already doing its job. We left it alone. What we rebuilt was everything around it — the brand strategy, tone of voice, visual identity system, website design and development, and the ongoing social media presence that keeps all of it coherent between launches. The site needed to work for the architect speccing a bespoke project and the private client buying a feeling, often at the same time. It does both now, without trying to explain itself too hard.
The work was recognised with an Honorable Mention and a Typography Honors nomination on Awwwards, and a Special Kudos on CSS Awards.
Over a year in, Royal Stranger has a language it didn't have before — one that sounds like Royal Stranger and no one else. Which, when you think about it, was always the whole point.
